LAWN TENNIS

MASTERTON,CLUB ANNUAL MEETING SUBSTANTIAL ADDITIONS TO MEMBERSHIP A substantial increase in membership was reported at the annual meeting of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club, held in the A. and P. Rooms last evening. Mr E. M. Hodder presided over a very good attendance. Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, Mr Hodder said that over thirty new members were definitely joining, and with prospects of gathering in at least another dozen or so, the club was in a fair way to overcome the temporary difficulties it had recently experienced. Its courts and appointments were second to none in the Dominion and only an adequate membership was needed to ensure a period of full prosperity. The club held valuable capital assets and its liabilities were much more than covered.

In competition tennis, the club had done very well last season and a large number of its members had been included in the teams of the Wairarapa Association, which had been more successful in its matches with other associations than for some years past. The chairman expressed the gratitude of the club to Mr G. R. Jackson, who had generously placed his rooms at its disposal for numerous committee meetings. Grateful thanks were extended also to Mr A. H. Ward for his splendid work as secretary during the past year.

Strongly urged to do so. Mr Hodder agreed to accept nomination for another term as president and was reelected unopposed, warm appreciation being expressed of the ability and untiring energy and enthusiasm he had brought to bear upon his duties. Other officers were elected for the ensuing year as follow:—Vice-presidents, Messrs H. M. A. Major an,d W. A. Michael; hon secretary and treasurer, Mr A. H. Ward; hon auditor, Mr A. D. Low; committee: Messrs G. R. Jackson, P. Hawksworth, Dr O’Connor and Miss Jocelyn Betts. One place was left vacant in order that it might be filled by a new member. Mr S. R. Gawith was re-elected as delegate to the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association. The ladies present were appointed a ladies’ committee, with Miss J. Betts as converor, and with power to add to their number. It was left to the committee to fix the date of the opening day. Various suggestions for the better oranisation of play was discussed, particularly from the point of view of extending facilities to new members, and it was agreed that the committee should give these matters its particular attention. In closing a very satisfactory meeting, the president urged that every member should make his or her individual contribution to the strength of the club, by bringing in new mempers and in other ways.
