CAPTAIN’S RETIREMENT
MOST POPULAR SHIPMASTER. MONTREAT., Canada. The retirement of Captain R. G. Latta as general manager of the Canadian Pacific Steamships Limited was recently announced. Captain Latta was among the most popular shipmasteis on the North Atlantic trade. In addition he was well known in ports throughout the world as he was skipper on more world cruises than any other Canadian Pacific officer. He had command during the world cruises of the largest ships in the service including the Empress of Britain, the Empress of Scotland and the Empress of Australia. Captain Latta was succeeded by Captain R. N. Stuart, a’so well known in world shipping circles. Captain Stuart succeeded Captain Latta in command of the Empress of Britain in 1935, then became general superintendent in Montreal and last year went to London as general superintendent there. During the war Captain Stuart saw outstanding service in the Royal Naval Reserve, commanding destroyers and “mystery ships." He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Service Order and Bar and the United States Naval Cross.
