TRUCKING YARDS
INSPECTED BY RAILWAYS OFFICIALS. MOVE TO SOLWAY SUGGESTED, The trucking yards at the Masterton Railway Station, which have been the subject of much unfavourable comment of late, were inspected this morning by Messrs H. L. P. Smith, District Engineer, and W. A. Woodger, District Traffic Manager. The Masterton Stationmaster (Mr A. Latimer), the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, the Borough Sanitary Inspector, Mr T. A. Russell, and the representatives of nine stock firms were also present. Full stress was laid by the auctioneers and Borough representatives on the unsanitary condition of the yards and the menace due to fly nuisance. The stock agents and the Mayor and Inspector were unanimous that the trucking yards should be shifted to Solway. This, it was pointed out, was no new proposal as the yards had at one time been located at Solway. It was also agreed that any expenditure on the yards at the Railway Station would be a waste of money. By moving the yards to Solway, it was stated, the fly nuisance would be eliminated altogether, stock kept out of the streets and yards would be provided that would be more in keeping with the quantity of stock moving from the district.
The stock agents pointed out that the present yards were far from satisfactory in layout and did not compare with Carterton, for instance. They were in agreement that it would be foolish to spend any money on the existing yards at the station.
Messrs Smith and Woodger promised to place the position' before the' General Manager of Railways and to send a reply indicating the attitude of the Department.
