OBITUARY

PRINCE ARTHUR OF CONNAUGHT LONDON, September 12. The death occurred while asleep of Prince Arthur of Connaught. Born at Windsor Castle on January 13, 1883, the son of the Duke’of Connaught, Prince Arthur of Connaught was a grandson of Queen Victoria. Thus he was closely related to King George VI. After being educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he entered the Army as an officer in the Scots Greys. He served in the South African War, and in the Great War, 1914-18, being mentioned in dispatches. He carried out missions to Japan on behalf of King George V. From 1920 to 1924, Prince Arthur was Governor-General of South Africa. In 1936 he was appointed personal A.D.C. to King George VI. His life was an interesting one. He filled with ability and distinction many important positions of trust assigned to him from time to time by King Edward VII., King George V., and King George VI. When King George V. went to India for the Durbar in 1911-12, Prince Arthur was appointed one of the four Councillors of State. He was a Knight of Justice of the Order of St John of Jerusalem and an Elder Brother of Trinity House. He was also a barrister-at-law of Grey’s Inn and a Privy Councillor since 1910. In 1913 he married Alexandra Victoria Albert Edwina Louise Duff, Duchess of Fife and Countess of MacDuff, whose mother, the Princess Royal, was the eldest daughter of King Edward VII, so that' Prince Arthur and the Duchess were second cousins. There is one son of the marriage. NEW ZEALAND SYMPATHY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.
