ENGLISHMEN DECLARE

The match between Australia and Leveson Gowers’ eleven was continued today. The home eleven declared with 363 up for the loss of 8 wickets, and when stumps were drawn Australia was at the wickets, there being no runs on the board and no wickets lost. Hutton batted stubbornly for 50 scored in 115 minutes. Leyland early was also subdued, until he stepped out and straight drove O’Reilly for 6, after which both batsmen were more enterprising and added 86 runs in 70 minutes. Leyland, after scoring 50 in 75 minutes, was bowled by a perfect ball. Hutton soon followed. He had batted for 165 minutes and hit eight 4’s. Hardstaff gave a great display of batting. He handled the spin bowlers well and, with Gibb, put on 100 in 55 minutes. Hardstaff continued to drive brilliantly, and reached the century in 115 minutes.
