FOOTBALL

BUSH CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY MANGATAINOKA. A hard and fast senior game was witnessed on Saturday at Rugby Park, Pahiatua, when the Bush Rugby championship final was played between two old rivals, Mangatainoka and Hamua. The previous Saturday’s game between these two teams resulted in a draw, and similarly when the final whistle went this Saturday again the score was even, 5 all. Extra time, ten minutes each way, was then played, when Mangataioka put on the seven points making them again the champions. PEARSON CUP. CARTERTON v OLD BOYS. (By “Touchline.”) This game was played at Carterton on Saturday, under vile conditions, and was really a mud scramble confined to the forwards. Old Boys were without Foreman, their full back, and Alexander, while Carterton were without Alexander, Howrie and Geange, all junior reps. It soon became evident that combined back play would be almost impossible owing to the greasy state of the ball. The Red forwards soon attacked, Carlett and Brown leading them in fine style but several free kicks gave Whites relief. However, shortly before half-time, parrington secured from a scrum and sent out to Steffert who drew his man to send on to Wilkin, the latter going over for a try, which Jackson failed to convert. The whistle sounded just after. On resuming, it was a hard forward battle and although Chadwick got the ball frequently to send out to Colquhoun, little progress was made, the deadly tackling by the Carterton forwards frustrating all Old Boys’ attempts to get going. And so, too, it was with Carterton, Old Boys’ forwards smothering their opponents backs in great style, The greater part of the time it looked as though the Reds would put on more points, their forwards attacking solidly and the Whites having to force several times. Then Thompson and Barnes carried play to within a few yards of Carterton’s goal-line right in front of the posts. A try seemed certain but Jackson picked up to find touch. There was no further score, Carterton winning by 3 points to nil. To mention any player on either for outstanding play would be unfair as every man in both teams played splendidly under adverse circumstances. Let me congratulate the Carterton juniors on theii’ excellent record for the season, having won the junior championship, seven-a-side competition and the Pearson Cup. Jimmy Steffert may well be proud of his team which is composed of splendid sports. I would also like to congratulate the Old Boy juniors, runners up, on their fine performance throughout the season. They have fine material in their ranks and are one and all real football sports. Mr H. Matson controlled the game.

THE OPAKI TEAM.

(By

“Touchline.”)

Now the season is over I want to say a few words of’appreciation about the Opaki players and supporters. At the beginning of the season matters were very serious, some suggesting that the team withdraw from the competition especially after forfeiting to Stars and playing Greytown with only 10 men to be beaten by 9 points to 6. However, we fielded a full team in almost every game after and defeated and played a drawn game with Carterton. The old club ties appealed to several players who had given up playing and they donned the Jersey to help the old club. Billy Allen, R. Jeffcoat, K. Clement, W. Fergus and I. Larsen took the field, and we never looked back. Sports like Seymour and Oliver coming in their cars with other players from Hastwell and Carterton respectively, are men of the right sort to have in a club. Two of our lads gained rep honours, M. Hargood and K. Roygard, and both thoroughly deserved the honour. Then what splendid supporters we had. Mr R. Hunt for three or four seasons has freely taken players in his car, besides coaching for two seasons. We owe a debt of thanks to Messrs C. Bunny, A. Campbell, D. M. Lauchlan, L. Mathews, K. Leys, G. Vincent and J. Colquhoun for donations and trophies. The trophies will be presented on Saturday night at Opaki when all players and supporters will be present.
