MINISTER RESIGNS

♦ — SOUTH AFRICAN CABINET DISPUTE. CAPE TOWN, Septembei’ 9. The Minister of Mines. Mr J. 11. Hofmeyr, has resigned following the Cabinet crisis. Mr Sturrock has resigned his seat and Mr Fourie has been appointed to the Senate and the Cabinet. There is no danger of a big party split. Mr Hofmeyr will remain a member of the party. A South African Cabinet crisis, involving the resignation of Mr J. H. Hofmeyr, Minister of Mines, arose unexpectedly, Mr A. P. J. Fourie, Minister of Commerce, was defeated at the general election, and General Hertzog insisted on his return to the Cabinet. Attempts to find a safe seat failed, and General Hertzog decided to nominate him as one of four Senators, with a knowledge of native affairs. Mr Hofmeyr expressed the opinion that this was a breach of constitutional practice. A sitting Senator, however, resigned to make way for Mr Fourie.
