FEATHERSTON

WOMEN'S DIVISION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Friday afternoon. Mrs Wakely presided over a fail’ attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Miss Card, Mesdames Arch Clark, Carter, Leslie, Aitken, J. McKenzie, Bocket, Brandon, Rea and Robbins. Mrs Wakely gave an interesting talk on cultivation of violets. Invitations received from Greytown branch for members to attend a Social Evening on September 30, and also from the Carterton branch for members to take part in spring flower show to be held September 23. The competitions resulted as follow: Flowering shrubs, Mrs Wakely 1 and 3, Mrs Charles 2. Bulbs, Mrs Wakely 1 and 3, Mrs Lipinski 2. Cut blooms, Mrs Charles 1 and 3, Mrs Lowell 2. Cooking, Mrs Linski 1, Mrs Charles 2, Mrs Lowell 3, Mrs Luki Smith highly commended. Members were asked to bring contributions in money or kind for the Makogai Leper Station, The hostesses were Mesdames Aitken and Lynskey. Kahutara Social Club. The Kahutara Social Club held its euchre tournament and dance in the hall on Saturday night, but owing to the Pukio Road being under water, a good many were prevented from attending. However, those present had a most enjoyable time. Streamers, paper hats, confetti and balloons were in evidence. The prizes were won as follow: — Ladies, Mrs Simmonds 1, Mrs R. Chisholm 2; men, A. Newland 1, J. Fenwick 2. Youth Service. A Youth Service was held in St John’s Churqh last night when the various churches were well represented. The Rev J. T. Holland spoke on “Are there any real standards of right and wrong.” The lessons were read by Mr C. Wilton and Mr A. Savage. The sidesmen were Mr P. Ritchie and Mr W. McNamara. The congregation were invited to attend the Parish Hall after the service where a friendly discussion on the service and sermon took place. Featherston Rest Room. The Kahutara and district Social Club has made a donation of £5 towards the cost of building the Featherston Rest Room. Personal Items. Mr D. Alexander, of Carterton, has taken a position at the Tuhitarata Dairy Factory, Lower Valley. Mr McCann (Masterton) is for the time being teaching at the Kahutara school. Mrs Stone and Mrs (Auckland) are visiting Mrs W. H. Sadler, Tauherinikau.
