CARTERTON

CARTER HOME COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carter Home Committee was held on Saturday. There were present Messrs D. L. Taverner, Jas. Udy, E. McKenzie, C. J. De Lacey, the Rev W. F. Stent and the secretary (Mr J. Laurenson). New mattresses for the beds in the home were ordered and also other necessities. The visitors for the current month are Crs. Udy and De Lacey. Salvation Army Rally. During the weekend the Wellington Central Salvation Army Band, accompanied by Lt. Commissioner F. Adams and other officers, paid a visit to Carterton. Large congregations were present at each meeting and the music played by the band was excellent and very much appreciated. Lt. Commissioner Adams delivered a very forceful sermon during Sunday evening’s service, taking his text from the Book of Revelations. Personal. Mr Arch. Freer, of Park Road, has returned to Carterton from Paraparaumu. The friends of Mr Len Knutson will be pleased to know that he successfully underwent an operation in the Wellington Hospital for injuries received in the Great War and that he is making good progress towards recovery. In Fighting Mood. A visitor to Carterton on Saturday damaged a window in the shop of Mr Aplin (chemist) to the extent of about 30s. The matter was placed in the hands of the police and the alleged offender was apprehended at a local hotel. White Butterflies. The very warm weather yesterday was the means of bringing out many white butterflies. The appearance of this pest so soon after the cold, wet weather is causing some anxiety to gardeners. Flood Waters. A settler of the Longbush district, referring to the recent heavy downpour of rain, said that he had never before known the creek in that vicinity to carry so much water. It was the highest flood ever known to the oldest settlers. Pre-wedding Function. Miss Noline Stubbs and Mr H. H. Trapp were the guests of honour at a party held on Saturday evening at the Masonic Hall, Carterton. The function was arranged by a number of friends and proved highly enjoyable. Dancing was indulged in to excellent music. During the proceedings Mr G. S. George called upon the guests to receive a cheque, which expressed in a tangible way the esteem in which they were both held by the donors. Mr Trapp briefly acknowledged the gift on behalf of his fiancee and himself, and thanked all for their special kindness. The speaker’s remarks were received with prolonged applause. A dainty supper was served by the committee and a happy-event terminated at midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. v Miss Stubbs and Mr Trapp are to be married at St Mark’s Church, Carterton, this evening, and will sail for their new home in Sydney on Friday next. Pearson Cup Winners. The Carterton juniors were highly elated when they succeeded in defeating the Old Boys’ team in the final challenge game for the Pearson Cup, thus retaining the trophy which they won in 1937. The juniors also won the championship in their grade, so have had a very successful season. The team has stuck together, practiced regularly, and this can be held responsible for the consistent performances recorded. The margin on Saturday was small —only three points to nil. If it had been a draw they would, of course, have retained the trophy.
