MILK DISTRIBUTION
CONFERENCE AT MASSEY COLLEGE. PROPOSALS BY RETAILERS. Modern developments in the production and distribution of milk were fully discussed at a conference of milk distributors held at Massey College. Palmerston North, recently. There was an attendance of about 100 at the conference, which was of five days’ duration. At a special meeting of distributors, at which Mr H. J. D. Brown, of Masterton, was present, the following resolution was passed: “That, in the opinion of this meeting regulation or legislation should be enacted to provide that all milk for sale for human consumption be pasteurised where it is economically and equitably possible, being a necessary step in the interests of public health.” After further discussion, it was also resolved: “That with a view to ensuring a higher standard of milk in the smaller areas of population, all milk shall be delivered in sealed containers, adequately chilled, and cool-stor-ed to point of delivery.” On the motion of Mr E. Southern Whangarei, it was resolved: “That the Internal Marketing Department be asked to fix both the wholesale and retail prices for milk throughout the Dominion.” The final resolution was: “That the Health Department should institute a publicity campaign to educate public opinion as to the necessity and advantages of pasteurisation of all milk for human consumption.” It was decided to form a New Zealand Milk Distributors’ Federation, Mr F. Lye, Cambridge being appointed chairman and Mr D. G. Ingle, Hamilton, secretary.
