EVER-INCREASING USEFULNESS. OTTAWA. Canada. The ever-increasing use of the aeroplane in Canada for commercial transportation of freight, particularly to the outlying mining fields and the northern outposls. is indicated in a report on aviation issued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. This report shows that 10,620,630 miles were flown in 1937 as’ compared with 7,803,942 miles in 1936 and 7,522,102 miles in 1935. In these flights 2,004,087 ton miles were carried in 1937 as compared with 1,164,617 in 1936. Freight and express accounted for 1.891.674 ton miles in 1937 and mail for 112,413 ton miles. This compared with 1,075,029 ton miles of freight and express and 89,588 ton miles of mail in 1936. It is interesting to note that in 1937 there were 22 light, aeroplane clubs in operation in Canada with a membership of J. 194 flyers and 1,189 non-flyers. Members of those light aeroplane clubs made 51.400 flights during the year covering an aggregate distance of 27,900 miles in 19,720 flying hours.
