COLOURED CHIFFONS

If you want to wash a flowered chiffon or georgette frock that has lost its freshness, do it this way, and the colours will not run. Fill a bowl with water that only just has the chill off, and add a generous amount of ammonia. Put the dress in this, and leave to soak for about a quarter of an hour. Then squeeze it gently, and rub very lightly any places you think may be more grubby than the rest. Then take out, and rinse in the ordinary way. The whole secret of this process is not to use any soap—you won’t find it at all necessary, as the ammonia is cleansing, and it is soap, allied with hot water, that so often causes colours to run.
