COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL THE TUTURUMURI ROAD (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough yesterday, the chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, presiding. Others present were Councillors Q. Donald, R. W. Matthews, G. J. Gillies, I. McLeod, L. J. Thompson, D. Cameron and R. Smith.
Mr B. Roberts," M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Lands asking the council to submit a plan to the Commissioner of Lands of the proposed new road at Tuturumuri together with full details, when the matter would be fully considered. The Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee wrote asking the council to arrange for a representative from the area controlled by the council to attend meetings of the committee, and also to set up a committee to decide what centennial celebrations and memorials should be arranged locally. Councillor Donald reported that at a meeting held in Featherston a memorial for the whole of the Wairarapa district was favoured. “I cannot see that it is any concern of the council,” remarked the chairman, when referring to a letter from the Maftinborough Home and School Association asking the council to join in a campaign to secure swimming baths in the town.
In his report, the engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood, stated that construction work on the Tuhitarata-Pirinoa Main Highway was now completed, and the road was under maintenance until the weather permitted priming being carried out. The estimate had been exceeded by a small amount, due to the cost of earthwork being higher than anticipated. The cost, exclusive of engineering, had been £6820 5s lid. The estimate was £6290, plus £3OO for the 20 chains extension beyond Pironoa. /It had taken some time to obtain approval of the plans for the Pigeon Bush Main Highway, and it was open to further discussion, but indications were that the board required a standard somewhat higher than had been allowed for. The treasurer reported that receipts since the last meeting amounted to £3658 14s 2d. Accounts amounting to £3923 10s were passed. Rates written off for 1934-35 totalled £369 Ils Bd. It was decided to take steps to legalise the Wharekaukau access road Permission was given for a water race to be constructed at Dry River, and when it is completed the counci) will legalise the work.
