“Note: —Gazette No. 6 was cancelled and not issued.” This is all that appears on a page of the “New Zealand Gazette,” issued with a supplement to the “Gazette” of Thursday, September 1. The information, which may or may not shield an interesting official mystery, is printed in large type. Possibly the explanation lies in one of those convenient "printer’s errors” which are used to hide many a mechanical mistake in publishing. Or was Gazette No. 6 cancelled for high’ reasons of State? In any case, the paper containing the information is labelled No. 6, and will apparently take its place in the folios when the year’s gazettes are bound. As yet there is a gap between No. 5 and No. 7, which were issued very early in the year.
