LONDON QUOTATIONS LAMB MARKET FIRMER Lamb market: Very firm, with prices again higher. Our consumption is being affected by low prices 'of homekilled lamb. Mutton market: Wethers meeting with better inquiry, with lightweights dearer. Ewes trade slow. Beef market: Chilled beef trade good this week, with little change in prices. New Zealand porker pigs: Consumption is improving with prices firm. New Zealand baconer pigs: Market steady, with prices unchanged. The above report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned, and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market. New Zealand sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b and under, 5 3-8 d (5.',d); 491 b to 561 b, 43d (43d); 571 b to 641 b, 4 5-8 d (4 5-8 d); 651 b to 721 b, 4Jd ('4Jd). Ewes, 481 b and under, 3 5-8 d (3 5-8 d); 491 b to 561 b. 3 l-8d (3{d); 571 b to 641 b, 3d (3d); 651 b to 721 b, 27-8 d (27-8 d New Zealand lambs: Canterbury, 36 lb and under, 8d (7 7-8 d); 371 b to 421 b, 8d (7 7-8 d); 431 b to 501 b, 7Jd (7 3-8 d). Messrs Levin and Co Ltd, have received the following cable from their London agents, dated September 8:— “Frozen meat quotations (prices on a ‘delivered’ basis, i.e. including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc). North Island down lambs, 28/361bs B£d per lb, 36/421bs B£d per lb; best North Island Xbd lambs, 28/361bs 7£d per lb, 36/421bs 7gd per lb; North Island second quality lambs, av 30/31 lbs, 7gd per lb; best North Island wether sheep under 481bs sgd per lb, 18/561bs, 43d per lb, 56/641bs, 4gd per lb, 64/721bs 4Jd per lb; North Island ewes, under 481bs 3gd per lb, 48/561bs 3Jd per lb, 64/721bs 2gd per lb. Compared with last week’s quotations, Down lambs gd per lb higher; second quality lambs id per lb lower; wethers under 481bs id per lb higher; ewes 48/561bs id per lb lower. The market is steady, but the demand for lamb is being checked by the high prices asked by sellers.”
