Mayman has returned to Pongaroa after a visit to Wellington. Miss Beth Robinson, of Wellington and formerly of Masterton, spent the weekend in Masterton. Mrs A. P. Campbell has returned to Pongaroa from Te Rehunga where she was the guest of Mrs R. Gray. Mr and Mrs W. Hoar, of Cambridge Terrace, Masterton, left today on a holiday which is to be spent in Hawke’s Bay and the Taupo district. At Wellington on September 1 Miss Ngaire Gwendoline Davies, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs O. L. Davies, Eketahuna, was married to Mr Frederick David John Butcher, eldest son of Mr and Mrs F. Butcher, Masterton. Mrs Guy Williams, captain-manager of' the Tasman Cup golf team, has returned to New Zealand accompanied by Miss S. Collins (Featherston), Miss Jocelyn Hornabrook (Masterton) and Miss Helen Buchanan, who have been staying in Melbourne with Mrs Sloan Morpeth, formerly Miss Susie Tolhurst, Australian woman golf champion. A delightful evening was recently spent at the residence of Miss C. M. Wood by the lady members of the staff of the W.F.C.A. in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Freda Stewart. Community singing, competitions and dancing made the evening go all too quickly, and before the singing of Auld Lang Syne the guest of honour was asked to accept the many useful gifts which had been brought along by her friends as a tangible expression of their good wishes for her future happiness. A pleasant function took place at the residence of Mr and Mrs C. Hartley, Alfredton, on Saturday night, the occasion being the twenty-first birthday of their granddaughter, Miss Dolly Rolls. There were over 70 guests present and an excellent programme was provided for the entertainment of the guests. After supper Mr Hartley apologised for the absence of Mr H. Rolls through illness and presented Miss Rolls with a gold key. Miss Rolls replied thanking everyone for their good wishes and gifts and 1 expressed her gratitude to her grandparents for the party. The engagement is announced of Patricia, twin daughter of Mr and Mrs D. J. Hogan, Bentley Street, Masterton, and Francis Patrick (Frank), eldest son of Mr and Mrs T. Treacy, Millers Flat, Otago.
