DAY ON BILLS

PROGRESS ON THE SECURITY LEGISLATION FAIR RENTS ACT EXTENDED POWER TO APPOINT WOMEN POLICE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Alterations to various Acts of Parliament are made by the Statutes Amendment Bill, which was introduced by Governor-General’s Message in the House of Representatives yesterday. Many of the amendments are of a technical nature, and others remove anomalies from existing law. There are two clauses of general interest — one extending the operation of the Fair Rents Act for a further year, and another amending the Police Force Act to provide -for the appointment of '.’.-omen police.

Further consideration was given the Social Security Bill in committee. Urgency was taken for the Bill with a view to making sufficient progress to permit the completion of Xs passage at today’s sitting. There are 139 clauses in the Bill, and discussion was resumed at clause 34, which had been reached when the measure was last under consideration. Twenty-four clauses were passed during the afternoon, but only two, one dealing with the period for which sickness benefits are payable and the other with unemployed benefits, were debated at any length. The closure was applied by the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, to discussion on the clause relating to the payment of unemployment benefits. After the tea adjournment there was a debate lasting nearly two hours on the clause affecting war pensioners.
