MAORI COUNCIL
MEETING IN MASTERTON. HOUSING & OTHER PROBLEMS. A. meeting of the Rongokako Maori Council was held in Masterton yesterday. There were present Messrs H. Tatere (chairman) of Dannevirke, J. F. Thompson, Greytown (official member) W. Tahana, W. Enoka, P. Paku. G T-e Whaiti, T. H. Potangaroa (hon secretary) and H. A. Truman (district health officer). The chairman, in welcoming the of' ficial member, Mr Thompson, and members of the council, stressed the question of housing and urged the members to make an individual survey of each case in the district and make <he necessary arrangements for applications for houses, the provision of which would help to raise the standard of living conditions of the Maori people in the district. Mr Thompson, in reply, thanked the chairman for the welcome accorded him and went on to say that better housing conditions would bo the means toward better health for the Maori people. He also dealt at length with conditions in South Seas Islands. The Council dealt with district survey reports, water supply, sanitary conditions and general business concerning council work.
