MASTERTON CLUB’S REPORT. VERY SATISFACTORY YEAR. The annual report of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club states:— The Committee presents the Report and Statement of Accounts for the Season 1937-38. From the point of view of . weather conditions, the Season was a very satisfactory one, while the courts were maintained in excellent condition right throughout. The Membership showed a decrease over the previous year, and the committee viewed this with concern. An energetic campaign for new members was launched towards the end of the year. This campaign lias already shown good results, but a still greater number are required to ensure a satisfactory new season. The Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s Annual Tournament was again held on the Club’s Courts for which privilege the Club received £lO ss. The following are the results of the Club’s Championships for 1937-38:— Men’s Singles, P. Hawksworth. Men’s Doubles, D. H. Ward and P. Hawskorth. Ladies’ Singles, Mrs P. Hawksworth. Ladies’ Doubles, Mrs P. Hawksworth and Miss J. Betts. Mixed Doubles, Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth. The following members attained representative honours in the Association teams during the season: Mesdames P. Hawksworth, A. H. Ward, Misses J. Betts, N. Payton, Messrs P. Hawksworth and D. H. Ward. The Club’s thanks are due to Mr G. R. Jackson for the use of his office for committee meetings during the season. Apart from the club’s pavilion, which has been well maintained and is in fine condition, the committee have been unable to pay the desired attention to boundary fences and cottage property. It has been recognised that the courts are the main consideration and no necessary expense with them has been spared. The result is that they have been and still are, the best grass courts in the district and equal to any in the dominion. These results are mainly due to the splendid services of the groundsman (Mr W. G. Bishop). . The Club’s thanks are due to Mr A. D. Low for auditing the accounts for the year, and also to the Lady Members who provided Afternoon Teas. — For the Committee, A. H. WARD, Hon Secretary.
