COAL STRIKE
MAY START IN AUSTRALIA ON FRIDAY OFFICIALS NOT HOPEFUL .. OF AGREEMENT. FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER’S WARNING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A coal strike through the Commonwealth will begin on Friday unless mediation intervenes. Meantime this decision has been reached after consultation by the miners with representatives of the Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Federated Engine Drivers’ and Firemen’s Association. The Miners’ Directions Committee agreed to tentative discussions with those owners and organisations which had indicated their willingness to consider the matters in dispute. Little hope of satisfactory results is entertained, however, by union officials. ’ The Federal Premier (Mr J. A. Lyons), in a statement at Canberra, warned the miners that if they resorted to direct action they would alienate the sympathy of the general public. A strike would amount to waging industrial war on the community and would be absolutely unjustified. The Sydney County Council’s coal stocks represent normal supplies for only twelve weeks.
