WOMEN’S GOLF
STANDARDS IN AUSTRALIA VERY HIGH MRS GUY WILLIAMS ON RECENT TOUR (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An opinion that the standard of women’s golf in Australia at present was very high and that there were in the Commonwealth a number of most promising young players, was expressed by Mrs Guy Williams, captain-manager of the New Zealand women’s team which was recently over there, Mrs Williams returned today by the Maunganui, accompanied by Misses Hornabrook, Buchanan and Collins, having remained behind in Sydney after the playing members returned to New Zealand. “While we are gratified at the New Zealand team having retained the Tasman Cup, it is disappointing,” said Mrs Williams, “that they did not de better in the open championships. It is rather difficult to become accustomed to the different light on Australian courses, and it appeared as though New Zealand teams required a little longer than a week to accustom themselves to the new conditions and recover from the crossing before commencing competition play.” She felt, she said, that the experience gained by members of the New Zealand team and the players who accompanied it had been most valuable, and would be reflected in their play. The trip had been most successful in every way, and she could not speak too highly of the splendid hospitality extended to them by their Australian hosts. In this respect they owed a particular debt of gratitude to Miss U. Clift, president of the New South Wales Golf Union and the Australian Ladies’ Golf Union.
