WOMEN’S HOCKEY
NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. GREAT RECORD OF SOUTHLAND TEAM. A record that parallels the best achievements in sport in New Zealand has been built up since 1930 by the Eastern Southland women’s hockey team, which passed through Wellington yesterday en route to the south after carrying off the Dominion women’s hockey championship for the fifth year in succession and for the eighth time since 1929. In 1930 Eastern Southland tied with Wellington at Invercargill and won outright in 1931 and 1932. In 1933 the team was beaten in the semi-final by Otago, which tied with Canterbury in the final. Since then Eastern Southland has dominated women’s hockey in New Zealand, winning by substantial margins. The closest finals were 2 —o against Otago at Dunedin in 1932 and 3 —l against Marlborough at Christchurch in 1935. Since 1930 Eastern Southland has played over- 50 games at Dominion tpurneys, losing only two, and has scored over 300 goals with approximately 25 against. The previous best records in women’s hockey at Dominion tournaments which were begun in 1908, were Southland (four outright wins and one tie), Poverty Bay (four outright wins and one tie), and Hawke’s Bay (three wins and one -tie). Canterbury has won the championship twice and has tied once. Wairarapa and Ruahine have won once and tied once, Nelson has had one outright win, and Wellington has twice been bracketed as a winner.
