TRANSPORT LICENSING
SITTING OF NO. 2 AUTHORITY. j TRANSFERS AND AMENDMENTS. A sitting of the No 2 Transport Licensing Authority was held in the Masterton Courthouse yesterday, Mr J. P. Skoglund presiding. Transfers of goods service licences were granted as follow: P. Dillon to L. S. Burling, in respect to a mail run from Eketahuna to Pahiatua via Rongomai; Elder and Barker to Elder and Son, Featherston, area licence for general goods. J. L. Leggett, Carterton, was given permission to delete one vehicle outhority from his licence. M. D. Sim was granted a licence to carry bakers’ goods between Masterton and Greytown. The cartage of these goods had been carried out for some time under a temporary licence. “As the Railways Department is buying out other services running between Masterton and Wellington carrying general goods in competition with the Railways it would be manifestly absurd to grant a licence to some one else,” observed Mr Skoglund in regard to an application from Ling Sing for the right to carry general goods to and from Chinese merchants between Wellington, Greytown and Masterton. At present applicant had a licence to carry fruit and vegetables only. The application was turned down. APPLICATION OPPOSED. An application by J. W. Milner for an additional authority for cream and general goods in the Eketahuna, Mauriceville, Masterton and Wairarapa South County Councils was opposed. Mr H. J. Knight, representing the Road Transport Alliance appeared on behalf of the objectors, Messrs Clark Bros. Applicant, who has a contract for the cartage of cream, butter and surplus cartage for the Mauriceville Dairy Co and does general carrying and has a wood and coal business as well, stated that one truck was insufficient to cope with the cream and other goods he had to handle, which included the delivery of between 400 to 500 tons of coal per year from the Mauriceville Station to the factory. He stressed the need for having a second truck in the case of a breakdown, stating that his present position was uneconomic. Mr Knight, opposing the application, said there was no need for an additional vehicle authority. Traffic in the district at present was amply catered for, he said, as there were already five vehicles in the district. If a licence were granted it would prejudice the position of the other carriers in the district. Robert James Clark, of Messrs Clark Bros, gave evidence in support of counsel’s contention. Stating that he considered applicant should have another truck, Mr Skoglund said applicant should t be allowed to conduct it economically. There were too many vehicles on the road at present for general carrying over wide areas and he would, grant a second vehicle authority for' work for the Mauriceville Dairy Co and for the cartage of coal. i Evidence was taken in respect to the application of Messrs Dillon and Mulvaney, for an increase in the payment for a mail contract between Featherston and Martinborough and Featherston Post Office and the Railway Station. Mr Knight appeared for applicants. It was stated that negotiations had already taken place with the Transport and P. and T. Departments regarding the matter. After evidence had been taken the case was adjourned for further discussion by Mr Skoglund with the Departments concerned.
