CARTERTON

WATERLOGGED PASTURES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The recent cold snap which was accompanied by rain, has been responsible for much feeding out of hay, etc to stock. In many cases the pastures are water logged, and those farmers who saved large quantities of hay are now receiving the benefit of their industry. In some instances dairymen have found it necessary to purchase hay, and those with a substantial surplus have received a good price for any they were prepared to sell. Cats as Rabitt Catchers. An old settler upon reading in the “Times-Age” last week of a cat catching a rabbit in the Carterton Borough, states that about' 45 years ago, when the Admiral Station beyond Gladstone was infested with rabbits a considerable number of house cats were taken over the Maungaraki Hill in an attempt to suppress the pest. In those days the late Mr W. P. Allen, of Carterton, and afterwards of Pahiatua, owned “Admiral” and it was found that cats of any age could not be successfully transferred to a new home as in a few days the animals returned to, the former haunts! Young cats took readily, to their new home, and they proved good hunters, and quite justified the experiment. The late Mr Allen had a large general store in Carterton which he sold out to the late Mr M. Caselberg, who eventually disposed of the business to the W.F.C.A. Ltd and it has continued as such to this day. Plunket Society Bulb Day. The Carterton branch of the Plunket Society which for many years has held a bulb day at Middle Run very successfully, today advertise a preliminary notice of the‘fixture.
