NOTICE TO CZECHS
OF FRENCH MILITARY PRECAUTIONS NO CORRESPONDING ACTION NECESSARY. AS VIGILANCE HAS LONG PREVAILED. (Recd This Day, 11.10 a.m.) PRAGUE, September 5. It is learned that France gave Czechoslovakia advance information of her military precautions. It is not expected that this will be followed at present by exceptional Czech measures, as vigilance has long. prevailed. NO MOBILISATION FRENCH FRONTIER DEFENCES MANNED. CIVIL POPULATION CALM. (Recd This Day, 1.15 p.m.) PARIS, September 5. “Precautionary measures” include Navy and Air Force preparations, the cancellation of leave of officials of the Ministries, gendarmes on the frontiers, and employees of prefectures. “We are ready for any eventuality and are not losing sight of the fact that Germany has 1,500,000 men under arms,” declared a Foreign Office spokesman. It is announced that it is intended to man fully the forts and defences of the Maginot Line and other frontier garrisons, but it is emphasised that there is no question of mobilisation. The measures could be regarded as a series of separate operations. The newspapers do not feature the measures, which are accepted by the civil population without excitement. SUDETEN DEMANDS. CZECH CABINET MAKING NEW PROPOSALS. (Recd This Day, 1.15 p.m.) PRAGUE, September 5. Cabinet, after sitting for 5J hours, issued a communique stating that new proposals were being presented to the Sudetens. Earlier the Sudetens again declared, after a conference with Herr Henlein, who reported on the Berchtesgaden conversations with Herr Hitler, that the dispute could be settled only by a comprehensive and rapid realisation of the Carlsbad demands. QUIET IN BELGIUM. NO SPECIAL MEASURES BEING TAKEN. (Recd This Day, 11.10 a.m.) BRUSSELS, September 5. Military movements are unlikely, as the Government does not consider special measures necessary. NAZIS SURPRISED. RIGHT TO TAKE SIMILAR STEPS. / (Recd This Day, 1.35 p.m.) NUREMBERG, September 5. The authorities are surprised at the French action and declare that, while not questioning France’s right to take any steps thought necessary for her security, Germany considered herself entitled to take similar steps.
