It is expected that the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, will visit Masterton in a private capacity towards the end of September. • The death of Cardinal -Hayes is reported in a cablegram from New York. Mr and Mrs T. A. Prain-Ambler, of Wellington, have been spending the week-end in Masterton.' Mr E. H. Harrington has been re-elected chairman of the Hukanui Co-operative Dairy Company. Mr R. McCann, of the Masterton West School, has received advice of his appointment as teacher at the Kahutara School.
Swimming and life-saving circles in Dunedin suffered a severe loss when Mr Andrew Findlay, who for many years had taken a keen and active interest in swimming and other sports in Otago, died in his sixty-third year after a brief illness.
A Press message from Wellington states that Mr G. E. F. Wood, chief compiler in the Government Statistician’s office has been appointed Government Statistician in Palestine, under the jurisdiction of the British Colonial Office. The appointment is in pursuance of the policy of that office in taking suitable members of the public service within the Dominions for selected positions. The death occurred at his residence at Devonport, Auckland, on Friday, of Mr Francis Harrison, aged 87. Mr Harrison was a prominent figure in legal circles, being secretary of the Wellington District Law Society for 40 years. At the first meeting of the conference of law societies in August, 1891, he was appointed secretary of that body, and when it was replaced by the New Zealand Law Society in 1891, he continued as its secretary. He held that office jointly with those of secre : tary of the district society and librarian of the Wellington and the judges’ libraries. He retired in June, 1925, and had since lived in Auckland. Mr R. Meek, L.L.8., and Mr I. Berendsen, 8.A., are the Rhodes Scholarship nominees this year from Victoria University College. Mr Meek was one of the nominees last year. He won the senior scholarship in law at the end of 1937. He has been prominent in the social life of the college, particularly in connection with the capping carnival. Recently he took part in the Plunket medal contest for oratory. His chief sport is swimming. Mr Berendsen entered the college at the early age of 15, and is now only just 19. Last year he won the senior scholarship in French, and was runner-up in Latin. He is to sit for his M.A. degree this year.
