WYNWOOD WINS AT LAST

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Wynwood has been a long time in securing a win, but he accomplished the feat in royal style by taking a double—the President’s and Vauxhall Handicaps—at the Otago Hunt Club’s last Saturday. Slayer evidently had the same idea as he filled second place 'to Wynwood in each race. Dissemble won the same double at the same meeting in the previous season, and it is probable that they have made racing history as it is doubtful whether any precedent has been established of different horses taking the same double in successive years. Wynwood, an aged chestnut gelding by Woodend from Winsome Lassie, is owned and trained by Mr J. Gray, at Invercargill. Unsoundness has always hampered Wynwood and two seasons ago he secured a lone third placing in a number of starts. Last season there was an improvement -as on two occasions he was just beaten in hard finishes over seven furlongs. What the future holds for Wynwood time alone will tell, but as he is aged and none too sound his prospects of getting far do not look too bright. Has Been Given Time. Night Attack, who is among the colts left in the Wanganui Guineas, is a half-brother by Night Raid to the brilliant ’Gold Rod. He was not very seriously tried last season, having one race in the spring and four more in the autumn, so he has been given plenty of time to develop. Night Attack is owned, by Mr F. B. Donnelly, of Hastings. Good Looking. One of the best-looking young horses in work at Invercargill is a three-year-old colt by Rosenor from Wanaka. a member of T. E. Pankhurst’s team. He was not hurried last season, but shaped well in the work he was given. He is a well-developed colt, and very level-headed. He will race for Mr W. D. McLeod. His dam Wanaka was an unraced mare by Paladin from Silver Peak/a high-class mare who has left winners in Silver Paper and Triple Cone. A Simper Descendant. Dazzling Raid, who recently returned from Australia, has been blistered, and is to be given a good spell. It is intended to take him up again later on, although there is a doubt about how long he will stand work. He was only raced twice, and won on one occasion. Dazzling Raid was got by Night Raid from Dazzling Light, by Kilbroney from Simper. Should Make Good. A three-year-old who is expected to be seen to advantage in the not far distant future is the Brazen —Lovelight colt Brazilian, who has furnished into an attractive-looking colt at Takanini. Although not very big, he is solidly proportioned. He is owned by the Auckland syndicate headed by Dr. W. C. Ring, and despite the fact that the venture has not yet met with any material success, there is every prospect of this colt helping considerably during the current season. Mating at Te Awamutu. Iceball, the dam of the Very successful two-year-old Hot Box, has been sent to Te Awamutu to be mated with Mr Standfast. The imported sire should be freely patronised in view of the fact that he ranks as a halfbrother to those very successful sires Gay Shield and Beau Pere. Dink is another of Cinna’s progeny to be standing in the Auckland Province, and Picture, who is in foal to Vaals, has been booked to this horse. Picture is the dam of Gay Talkie, who was sold last season for India at the remunerative price of 3000 guineas. Seabiscuit's Record. When the American crack Seabiscuit scored in the Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park on July 16, he carried 9.7 and was timed to run the mile and a quarter in 2min. 3 4-ssecs., breaking Specify’s track record by three-fifths of a second. The first two furlongs were run in 23 4-ssecs., half-mile in 47 1-5 secs., six furlongs in Imin. 11 2-ssecs., and mile in Imin. 37 4-ssecs. The pace was set by Specify, who had a lead of ten lengths at one stage, .and it was small wonder that the crowd gave Seabiscuit a rousing reception when he finished brilliantly to score decisively from the pacemaker. First money of 37,150 dollars brought Seabiscuit’s total earnings to 290,305 dollars, and placed him sixth oh the list of leading American winners. Seabiscuit was ridden by G. Woolf, who won the first Santa Anita Handicap on Azucar. Woolf claims that Seabiscuit is the greatest horse in America.

A Promising Youngster. Aranui is a two-year-old colt by Colossus from Cupid’s Mark, by Arrowsmith from Sleeping Beauty, by Boniform. Cupid’s Mark is ■ a half-

sister to Palm, who raced with success in Sydney a few years ago. Aranui cost Hogan 240 guineas as/a yearling at Trentham, and is undoubtedly a most promising youngster. He was produced in the two-year-old parade at the Grand National meeting, and attracted attention by leading his division home. Previously he had shaped very attractively in a parade at Washdyke. Melbourne racegoers will be much impressed with this well-grown chestnut colt, who can be depended upon to make an early return. In Abeyance. Although nothing has yet been decided regarding Dictate, there is still a possibility of his being sent to Melbourne later in the month. He has gone on the right way since his one race at the Grand National meeting, and if he is sent over he should give a good account of himself. A Good Stamp. The colours of Mr R. Acton-Adams were seen at Wingatui on Saturday for the first time for many years. They were borne by Night Scout, a four-year-old gelding by Lord Warden from Night Myth, by Night Raid from Luthy by Lucullus from Lisp by Demosthenes. He is a big chestnut, and although he ran very greenly and jumped wildly, more will be heard of him later. Surmount. Although Surmont is reported to be well forward, it has been decided not to take him to Wanganui, and he will make his three-year-old reappearance at Trentham in October, where one of his engagements will be the Harcourt Stakes. Out for Twelve Months. When Trebleack broke down last week the trouble was in the same place that caused him to be spelled last autumn, and it is feared that he will have to be turhed out for at least a year. t Brunhilde. The Siegfried filly Brunhilde has been training on satisfactorily and a few gallops wil bring her into racing shape. Last season she was second to Alma in the Stewards’ Handicap and a hard race when she won the Oaks Stakes seemed to set her back. Bad Luck. A. very promising filly by Blatherskite from Flout by Polazel from Disdainful broke a leg a few days ago while being exercised on the roads and had to be destroyed. The filly had been showing great promise on the track. Bilbao. Bilbao, a recent addition to A. E. Didham’s stable, is bred on attractive lines. Last season he started seven times, and was placed third in one of his starts. Bilbao is a four-year-old by Balboa from Winsome Sister, by Some Boy tl—Sister Regis, by Charlemagne II —St. Regis, by Hotchkiss. Paladin. Paladin is apparently far more appreciated in Canterbury than he was in Otago as from all accounts far more than a full book has recognised his transference. In addition to his individual merit as a sire, Paladin is closely connected with several of the most successful sires in the world. English Two-year-olds. One of the outstanding two-year-olds in England this season is Meadow, a bay colt, by Fairway out of Silver Mist. He is a brother 'to Silver Crest, and as a yearling cost Sir Abe Bailey 6100gns. At Ascot he won the New Stakes in good style from a field of 22. His dam is by Craig an Eran, .son of Sunstar. Another good two-year-old is unbeaten Portobello, a bay gelding by Portlaw out of Zingarella, by Solario. Portobello won the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot from a large field, making faster time over the five furlongs than Meadow did in his race. On the same day Maranta( by Solario out of Mispec, by Tetratema) beat some good horses in the Hardwicke Stakes.. He is a four-year-old owned by Sir Abe Bailey. Goya II was second and Perifox third. Thus France and America were both represented.

Nigger Boy. While most of the two-year-olds that took part in the two-xear-old parade at the Otago Hunt Me-.mg are engaged in the M’Lean Stakes to be run next October, only Nigger Boy is engaged in the John Grigg Stakes. He has been in steady work since last Rebruary, and will be well forward for next month’s engagement. Last year his trainer won this race with Ortyx, who ran the halfmile in 47 2-ssecs. Francis Drake. Francis Drake has always been a good horse and would hold a better record but for interruptions to his training. He is now reported to be shaping well on the track. Erebus. Erebus created a very favourable impression when schooled at Riccarton prior to the Grand National meeting and since then has been shaping well. To be Spelled. El Caballo has had a good deal of racing during the past month, and showed signs of it last week. He is now to be given a spell until next season, and is one to be kept in mind when he returns. NEW ZEALAND CUP LIST OF NOMINATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Nominations received today for the New Zealand Cup, to be decided at Riccarton on November 5, total 56, as against 55 last year. The list is representative of all racing centres in New Zealand and includes the best available handicap performers in the Dominion. An interesting entrant is last year’s winner, Cerne Abbas, and no doubt she has been included in case her Melbourne trip is not undertaken. Her stable-mate, Royal Chief, is, however, an absentee. Wild Chase, runner-up to Cerne Abbas, has not been nominated, but Trench Fight will take his place as a worthy representative of the Chokebore stable.
