EXPULSION OF JEWS
DECREE CAUSES PANIC IN ITALY RESIDENTS OF TWENTY YEARS CAST OUT MANY MARRIED TO ITALIANS By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Reed This Day, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, September 1. The “Daily Telegraph’s" Rome correspondent says Jews are panic stricken, as a result of the expulsion decree (reported in an earlier cablegram). It is estimated that ten thousand persons are affected. Many have resided in Italy for twenty years. Thousands, are married to Italian Jewesses and Gentiles. Italians generally welcome the decree, especially doctors, dentists and lawyers, who are relieved that some of their most successful rivals will disappear. Tradesmen also expect a revival of business. Signor Virginio Gayda, writing in the “Giornale D’ltalia,” characterises foreign Jews as racial and political exiles, not worthy economic rivals. Their expulsion, he says, restores Italy’s racial purity and freedom from foreign influence. Other newspapers allege that Jews have attempted to use their money to make war against Italy. Ethiopia is not included in the prohibition, as Jews were expelled after the war.
