SURPLUS POTATOES
USE IN FEEDING SHEEP SUGGESTED OTAGO MEMBER’S SUGGESTION (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Discussing the Department of Agriculture vote of £380,792, Mr J. A. McL. Roy (Clutha) pointed out that hundreds and even thousands of tons of potatoes were threatened with becoming a dead loss in Canterbury as a result of a surplus, while in his electorate in South Otago, there had been a big shortage of winter feed. He understood that potatoes made excellent sheep feed, and he suggested that something might be done to send Canterbury’s surplus potatoes to Otago for this purpose. This would assist farmers in both localities. The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon W. Lee Martin), in reply, said he did not see why Mr Roy’s suggestion should not be adopted and he thought his Department would be prepared to co-operate.
