YANGTSE BATTLES
GREAT VICTORY CLAIMED BY CHINESE ON SOUTH BANK OF RIVER ENEMY SUFFERS HEAVY LOSSES (Recd This Day, 9.25 a.m.) HANKOW, September 1. The Chinese claim a great victory on the south bank of the Yangtse, west of Juichang. They have driven back the Japanese four miles, inflicting 4000 casualties. JAPANESE REPORT CHINESE FALLING BACK IN CONFUSION TOKIO, September 1. The Chinese are reported to be falling back in confusion of Teian, the last main point of the Hankow defences. On the South Yangtse front 20 Chinese divisions are in danger of entrapment.
