INTOXICATED MOTORISTS

ONE SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, September 1. “It is rather an absurdity that a large number of men should be able to get away from their work in the middle of the week to see a football match,” said Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., when hearing charges against two men of being intoxicated while in charge of motor-cars. Counsel said that accused had been to a Ranfurly Shield match and had drunk too much liquor. In reply to the magistrate’s comment, counsel said that letting men away for the occasion had not only been winked at but agreed to by those in charge of public works and other employers. Thomas Turnbull was fined £l5 and his licence . was cancelled for 12 months. Albert John Sanders, who drove into another car, which was extensively damaged, and who had been fined in April last for a similar offence, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
