TOURNAMENT AT TIMARU. WAIRARAPA DEFEATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, September 1. Play on the second day of the New Zealand women’s basketball tournament took place in showery weather and the concluding games were played in a steady drizzle. Finalists in the first grade will probably be the present champions, Wellington, and Canterbury. So far they have been markedly superior to the other teams. They will meet tomorrow. Results: — First grade: Wellington 20, Hawke’s Bay 11; Canterbury 27, Otago 12; Southland 11, Auckland 4; Hawke’s Bay 20, Auckland 11; Southland 17, Otago 16. Second grade: South Canterbury 19, Ashburton 11; Southland Minor 17, Manawatu 7; Hutt Valley 12, Wairarapa 11; Ashburton 21, Manawatu 19; Waikato 15, Wairarapa 12; Wairoa 10, Waikato 8; South Canterbury 14, Hutt Valley 12. Third grade: West Coast 11, Marlborough 9; Wanganui 20, Buller 12; Hawke’s Bay Minor 20, Hokitika 10; Bush 18, Horowhenua 11; Wanganui 17, North Otago 14; Horowhenua 24, Buller 19; Bush 22, Hawke’s Bay Minor 9; Marlborough 11, North Otago 9. The table of points in the A grade is: Wellington, Canterbury and Southland, 4 each; Otago and Hawke’s Bay, 2 each; Auckland 0. The table of points in the B grade is: South Canterbury, 8; Southland Minor 5; Wairoa and Ashburton, 4 each; Hutt Valley, 3; Wairarapa, 2; Waikato, 0., West Coast, Bush and Wanganui, in the third grade, have won all their games so far. The 1939 New Zealand basketball tournament will be held in Southland.
