CENTRAL BOARD

CONTROL OF VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. A CARTERTON SCHEME. (“Times-Age” Special.) At its'meeting last night the Carterton Borough Council approved of a proposal by Mr R. Girling Butcher, Government Inspector of Fire Brigades to establish a Central Council to control the local volunteer fire brigade. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, said that under the proposed scheme there would be very little interference in the present control of the brigade by the council, while the brigade would retain its volunteer status. The Superintendent of the brigade had stated that the proposal was quite satisfactory as far as he was concerned. Mr Taverner said they had a very efficient fire brigade. The council purchased 500 feet of new hose each year and also made a contribution direct to the brigade. A telephone was also provided and the insurance rates paid, making a total expenditure of about £lOO a year. The building had been erected and the electrict siren provided by public subscription, but the council had purchased the motor truck and Dennis pump. Including capital expenditure, the average cost of the brigade to the council over the past 15 years had been about £167. Instead of amalgamating the fire boards, Mr Taverner continued, Mr Girling Butcher now intended to recommend to the Government that a central board, consisting of insurance company representatives and a Government representative, be.set up. It was not possible to establish any more fire boards. At present the council received nothing from the insurance companies, but with the central board in operation contributions would be made by the companies, while there would be little interference with the existing control of the brigade and any dispute between the council and the central board would go to arbitration. The volunteer status of the brigade would be unaltered. “I am hoping,” added Mr Taverner, “that when the board is set up we will be able to make representations to have the borough insurance schedule reduced a scale.”

The action of the’Mayor in agreeing to the suggested new scheme was approved.
