SOLDIERS’ PENSIONS
GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSALS. INCREASES TO BE GRANTED IN FINANCE BILL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The intentions of the Government in connection with the granting of increases in the rate of returned soldiers’ pensions were outlined in the House of Representatives yesterday by the acting-Leader of the House, the Hon P. Fraser, in reply to an urgent question from Mr A. C. A. Sexton (Independent, Franklin). Mr Sextoh asked for information asto the date on which an amendment to the War Pensions Act would be brought down and inquired whether there would be any amendments other than those already outlined by the Minister of Finance, the Hon W. Nash, in his explanation of the Social Security Bill. A further request by Mr Sexton was that adequate time should be given for the consideration of the amendments by the Returned Soldiers’ Association before the passage of the Bill.
“It is proposed to incorporate the proposed amendments in a Finance Bill,” said Mr Fraser, “and the alterations will be along the lines indicated in the report of the National Health and Superannuation Committee which has already been presented to the House. The representations of the Returned Soldiers’ Association have been taken into full consideration and there will be, if necessary, opportunities for further representation after the Bill is introduced.”
