LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. A WIN FOR WAIRARAPA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 30. The New Zealand women’s hockey tournament was continued in perfect weather, although grounds were in a plastic state. Eastern Southland had their hardest tussle to date in an even first spell with Taranaki, but kept Taranaki penned up practically the second half. Ashburton lead Section A, Eastern Southland lead section B and Canterbury lead section C. Results:— Section A: Wairarapa 5, Hawke’s Bay 0; Ashburton 1, Manawatu 0. Section B: Eastern Southland 4, Taranaki 0; Wellington 2, Poverty Bay B 0; Auckland 11, Ruahine 0. Section C: Canterbury 8, Poverty Bay A 0; Nelson 3, Akitio 2. Wairarapa surprised Hawke’s Bay by scoring five goals, Miss Cadwallader scoring two and Misses Harding and Henderson and Mrs T. Te Tau one each. Misses Cadwallader and Henderson were the best Wairarapa forwards and Miss Barnes worked well at centre, half. Misses Simondsen and Eddy were the best of the Hawke’s Bay team. A series of accidents occurred near the close of the game, Misses Simondsen and Eddy and Mrs T. Te Tau all receiving attention. Miss Eddy retired from the game.
REPRESENTATIVE games. SATURDAY’S ATTRACTIONS. A very attractive programme for hockey enthusiasts has been arranged in Masterton for Saturday next, when four representative games will be played at Lansdowne. The Wellington representative senior and junior men’s teams will be seen in action against strong Wairarapa teams. The Wellington teams will be at full strength and a bright exhibition of the stick game is anticipated. Two Wellington women’s teams will meet Wairarapa teams also at Lansdowne, and a good day’s sport is assured all who attend.
