WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
UPPER PLAIN MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Mannell. Mrs G. Dagg presided over a very good attendance. Visitors and three new members were welcomed by the president. The meeting opened with the “Aspiration” and “Ode to Friendship.” Miss Doreen Laing gave a most comprehensive report on the Conference which she attended as a delegate. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mrs Condon and Miss McKenzie, a most interesting demonstration was given on rug-making with wool by Miss E. Mannell. The competition for the month resulted as follows: —Best bloom, Mrs W. Taplin 1, Mrs W. G. Laing 2. In this competition some beautiful blooms were displayed. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs G. Dagg, to Miss Mannell and to Miss Laing. A happy, and instructive afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. DANCE AT ALFREDTON. The Alfredton Women's Institute held the annual social and dance last Tuesday evening, there being an excellent attendance, many coming long distances. Items were interspersed between dances, the first being Cowboy songs by the children in character. A playette was given by Mrs Hull, Mrs Dickens and Miss Zona Smith which caused much amusement. Mrs Ogilvy sang very sweetly and six junior members danced a Spanish ballet dance very gracefully.
