EVICTED PEASANTS
PROMISED COMPENSATION BY ITALIANS TREATED WITH COURTESY (Recd This Day, at noon) LONDON, August 29. The “Telegraph’s” Paris correspondent says that the expelled peasants from Isola say the Italians promised compensation, and acted most courteously when enforcing the evictions. .The Paris correspondent of “The Times” (a cablegram reported yesterday), states that 800 Frenchmen, resident in Isola, in the Alps Maritimes, whose land is on the Italian side of the frontier owing to the boundary which was drawn under the treaty of 1860, have been advised by the Italian authorities that the land is required for military purposes, and must be handed over immediately. If the demand is accepted by August 29 they will be given a month to remove their cattle and gather the harvest, otherwise troops will occupy the farms and the work of building fortifications will begin without delay. The mayor of Isola declares that the owners are rejecting the demand, and hope that the French and Italian Government will reach a compromise.
