CARTERTON

RACING CLUB MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club the election of officers resulted as follows, all being reelected:—Patron, the Hon. A. D. McLeod; president, Mr W. Howard .Booth; vice-presidents, Messrs C. Reid and L. H. Smart; hon. treasurer, Mr P. A. Cole. All the retiring stewards were re-elected with the exception of Mr A. C. Tucker, who did not seek election. His place was taken by Mr H. J. Brown. Mr H. M. B. Trapp was reappointed auditor. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet Mr W. Howard Booth said that the totalisator returns were satisfactory, and there was no reason why they should not increase. He wished to thank the stewards for their assistance, especially the chairman of the course committee, Mr A. O. Abbott. In referring to the Racing Conference he stated that the president had referred to the ridiculous restrictions imposed on clubs, such 'as the prohibition of the double totalisator. He had also commented unfavourably on the huge tax levied on the sport. Much of the tax had been imposed during the war years, and it should have been wiped out long ago. Mr L. H. Smart (vice-president) in seconding the motion, said that the position was very satisfactory. He was pleased to note that the net totalisator receipts had covered the stake money. It was many years since that had happened. The donations from the Trotting and Golf clubs had been of great assistance to the .-club. Maintenance expenses had beep low, and taking everything into consideration the position was very sound. The resolution was carried. Labour Party Social. On Saturday night the Labour Party Social Club held its weekly euchre tournament and dance, there being a good attendance. The prizes for euchre were won by Mrs Brown (Carterton), Mrs Sowman (Clareville), Mr T. Teal and Mrs Knutson. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Dick and Miss Laurenson. Supper was provided by the ladies’ committee. Personal. 1 The friends of Mrs E.
