PARIS CURIOSITIES
STREET SIX YARDS LONG. The official centre of Paris, from which- all distances are calculated, is in the open square in front of Notre Dame cathedral. The spot is marked by a metal plate with a star showing the points of the compass. The shortest street in Paris is the Rue des Degres, or Street of Steps. It measures six yards in length by four wide, and consists of a flight of steps. The oldest among the eighty thousand trees of Paris is an acacia tree planted 252 years ago. It stands in the small square adjoining the oldest church of Paris, St Julien-le-Pauvre. The oldest house in Paris is at 3, Rue Volta, and' dates from the end of the fourteenth century.
The smallest square in Paris is the Square du Lieutenant Jean Chaure. It contains neither tree nor seat and covers an area of less than 380 square yards.
