PIRINOA

INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. (“Times-Age” Special.) There has been an epidemic of influenza in this district and several residents have been laid aside with illness. In some cases pneumonia has followed with the result that the patients have been sent to hospital. SCHOOL CONCERT. A concert organised by the pupils of the local school and assisted by some adults was given in the Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon. There was a splendid attendance and the entertainment was greatly appreciated. The applause which greeted several of the items was well deserved and much credit is due to those responsible for organising the concert. The takings are in aid of the local queen candidate. GOLF COMPETITIONS. The final of the ladies’ championship of the local Golf Club was played on Saturday between Mrs Tikao (present champion) and Miss Edgelow. After a keen tussle the holder was successful by one up. D. Tikao beat M. Herangi by 2 up in a Doughty Cup match. MOTOR CAR ACCIDENTS. A motor car owned and driven by a Pukio resident collided with a draught horse on the Kahutara Road on Saturday. The horse was killed and the car considerably damaged. A local motorist when returning from Greytowm on Saturday evening had the misfortune to run off the road into a deep drain adjacent to Te Pare. Apart from broken windows and dented mudguards no damage was done. PIG SHOOTING EXPEDITION. Four members of a foreign Consular service were the guests of Messrs Carroll and Mullins on a pig shooting expedition recently on one of the coastal stations. 1 PERSONALS. Mr Bert Wallace, who is well-known in this district, has entered hospital to undergo an operation. Mr D. Gray, who was taken ill recently, is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital. Mr A. Linton, who has been in Wellington on Dairy Board matters has returned home. Messrs J. Cowan and T. Graham have returned from a visit to Feilding.
