LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

MASTERTON BRANCH MEETING. A meeting of the Masterton branch of the League of Nations Union was held in the Women’s Division Rooms, Mrs T. R. Barrer presiding over a fair attendance of members. The secretary, Miss Barrer, reported that one address had been delivered during the month to the Rangitumau branch of the Women’s Division, on “World Peace Organisations, What They Are, What They Do and What They Hope to Do.” The Wanganui League of Nations Union was supplied with youth group literature. A donation of £4 4s 6d had been received from the New Zealand Students’ Association. Miss Barrer stated that during the month one new member had joined the branch, one was transferred and three resignations received. No subscriptions were outstanding. Addresses had been supplied to Whatman Home and Wairarapa College respectively to enable 25 and 200 pupils to correspond with children abroad. It was decided, in order to raise funds for extensions and general purposes, that a jumble sale should be held at the Te Ore Ore School on Saturday, September 10. A recommendation was made that the Masterton branch should approach Dominion headquarters with a view to sending a delegate to the 21st birthday celebrations of the League of Nations Union in London in 1939. The branch would donate £5 towards the cost, provided other branches sent their share. It was proposed that next month a debate should be held, either on whether an international language was desirable and if so, which was the best, basic English or Esperanto or on some other suitable subject. The arrangements were left in the hands of Mr W. Clark. The secretary stated that information concerning cheap tours overseas could be supplied to those interested
