AUSTRALIA’S DAY

AT U.S.A. TENNIS TOURNEV

QUIST AND BROMWICH WIN AGAIN. SOME BRILLIANT PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 12.5 p.m.) BOSTON, August 26. The United States doubles’ championships were continued today with the following results:— Men’s doubles: Quist and Bromwich (Australia) defeated Molloy and Toley (U.S.A.), 6/1, 9/7, 6/2. Quist’s beautiful returns of service and smashing volleys plus Bromwich”s’ severe twohanded stroking were outstanding features of the Australian’s victory over Molloy and Toley. The American’s stroked well and their passing shots frequently were very brilliant, but they were clearly no match for the Australians. Hopman and Schwartz (Australia) defeated Petra and Destremau (France), 6/0, 9/7, 8/6. Hopman and Schwartz due to capable volleying swept through the first set easily, but Petra and Destremau rallied after this and made the final two sets interesting, although the ultimate outcome was never in doubt. Petra played an exceptionally good game but Destremau was slow and unable to cope with the Australian’s volleys and lobs.

Women’s doubles: —Semi-finals: Miss Marble and Mrs Fabyan (U.S.A.) defeated Misses S.tammers and Lumb (Britain), 6/2, 6/2. Misses Stammers and Lumb played their usual good game and fought hard but Miss Marble’s powerful stroking was just too much for them. Mixed doubles: —Third round: Mrs Fabyan and Riggs defeated Miss Wightman and Robertson, 6/1, 6/1; Miss Wynne and Quist defeated Miss Morrill and York, 6/0, 6/1; Miss Coyne and Bromwich defeated Miss Osborne and Ballagh, 5/7, 6/4, 10/8; Miss Marble and Bitige defeated Mlle. Jedrzejowska and Kukuljevic, 6/2, 8/10, 6/2; Mrs Hopman and Hopman defeated Miss Stanton and Shaves, 6/1, 6/0. Quarterfinal: Miss Wynne and Quist defeated Mrs Fabyan and Riggs, 9/7, 6/2. Mixed doubles: Mrs Wolfenden and Kovacs defeated Miss Stevenson and Schwartz, 1/6, 6/4, 8//6. Schwartz was obviously fatigued by his long struggle against the French players in the doubles and was just unable to withstand the blistering pace set by the fresher player, Kovacs, although he tried courageously. Miss Stevenson played well but found that too big a burden had been shifted to her shoulders. Hopman has cabled to the Australian Associated Press announcing the intention of himself and Schwartz to default to Quist and Bromwich. HOPMAN IN EXPLANATION REASONS FOR DEFAULT. OFFICIALS BITTERLY PROTEST. (Recd This Day, 12.45 p.m.) BOSTON, August 25. Hopman has explained that the match between Quist and Bromwich and Schwartz and himself could only be an exhibition affair at best. He expressed the opinon that it would be impossible for he and Schwartz to play to win since frequent practice against Quist and Bromwich had given them a knowledge of the Davis Cup players’ strong points and their weaknesses which the Americans did not possess, and playing to win with the Americans sitting in the stands and taking notes would be decidedly unwise and likely to prove detrimental to the chances of Quist and Budge in both the doubles finals and the challenge matches. He had informed the tournament officials of his decision and they had protested bitterly, insisting that the tickets had'been already sold, and that it was unsportsmanlike to disappoint the spectators. The officials are attempting to persuade Hopman to change his_ decision and-put on merely an exhibition game with the spectators not knowing that it was not a genuine tussle.
