SAFETY CROSSINGS
— (To the Editor.) Sir, —It is certain that the pedestrian citizens of Masterton regret genuinely the council’s decision against the provision of two safety crossings which were under discussion at the recent meeting of the council. In the opinion of numerous local residents, the provision of two crossings in Queen Street is an urgent and pressing necessity in the interests of women and children, the aged arid infirm. Councillor Ninnes fell into error when he ungenerously questioned “Why not go the whole hog?” The proposition before his council was simply “Why not introduce two safety crossings?” and it is very apparent that he failed to appreciate the position in which are placed the classes of people referred to above. It was surprising, too, to notice that the Mayor himself opposed the proposition. The installation of safety crossings is a humanitarian necessity (although a Labour idea) and it is pleasing to note that towns much smaller than Masterton appreciate their worth, Upper Hutt, for example, having two such crossings. Is it that the motorowning councillors are opposed to a pedestrian benefiting innovation, or is it a case of their being not conversant with the present day necessities and requirements? It is to be hoped that ■ Councillor Gardner and those who voted with him in the affirmative will continue their public spirited efforts to achieve their purpose.—l am, etc., HOMAI TE RINGARINGA, EHOA.
