OVER NINETEEN MILLIONS IN EIGHT YEARS. SOUTH AFRICAN FIGURES. Since 1931 no less, a sum than £19,607,000 has been spent by the Union of South Africa Treasury on asistance to farmers. Total assistance detailed Under Separate heads is as follows: Export subsidies, £11,011,000; interest subsidies, £3,407,000; redemption of "maize quota certificates, £501,000; contribution to maize pool, £550,000; contribution to wheat pool, £153,000; contribution to Wheat Industry Control Board representing payment of compensation for storage of wheat, £1,290,000; credit and co-operative societies, £650,000; soil erosion and pasture improvement, £275,000; soil erosion wage subsidies, £242,000; protection of watersheds, £14,000; eradication of noxious weeds, £8,000; eradication of noxious weeds wage subsidies, £128,000; eradication of jointed cactus, £85,000; eradication of “gifblaar,” £13,000; subsidies to farmers for purchase of bulls, £195,000; payment to Railway Administration in, respect of outstanding promissory notes for transport of stock from drought-stricken areas, £49,000; rebate of railway rates on slaughter and drought-stricken stock, £751,000; rebate of railway rates on fruit, wool, mohair and wattle bark, £213,000; rebate on export charges on fruit, £166,000; subsidies to maize farmers for construction of silos and sheds, £30,000; and housing and rehabilitation on farms, £437,000.
