HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR.
VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS. WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Protect Potatoes by drawing earth well up to them when they come above ground. Sowings can now be made of Carrots, Parsnips, Beet, Turnips, Spinach, Onions, Silver Beet, Lettuce, Radishes, Mustard, Cress, Parsley, etc. Transplant autumn grown Onions, Rhubarb, Asparagus, Cabbage and Lettuce. Attend to weeding and thinning of seedling crops. Do not allow plants to become drawn and weak before thinning is done. An application of sulphate of ammonia will be helpful to Potatoes showing through the soil. Frequent soil stirring at this season, in addition to encouraging growth, is a means of checking slug ravages. Manure and prepare plots for Cucumbers, Marrows and Pumpkins. FLOWER GARDEN. Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendrons may now be planted in properly prepared ground. The planting of Roses should be completed as soon as possible. Perennial Phlox, Paeonies, Japanese Irises, Michaelmas Daisies and other herbaceous perennials may still be planted./ Carnations, Picotees, Pansies, Violas and other flowering plants may be bedded out as required. Lightly stir soil among Anemones, Ranunculi and spring flowering bulbs. FRUIT GARDEN. Any arrears of planting should be taken in hand in favourable weather. Now is the time to help backward trees with a little manure; super six ounces, kainit two ounces and one ounce of sulphate of ammonia to each tree. Spray all fruit trees. Red oil for pip fruits, Lime Sulphur for stone fruits and roses.
