SITTING OF MAGISTRATE’S COURT. POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following police and by-law cases were dealt with by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., at yesterday’s sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court: — Oswald Dykes and William Michael Sellar were each fined £2 and 10s costs for exceeding 30 miles an hour in a restricted area. For crossing the Petone level crossing when the railway line was not clear, Josiah Udy was convicted and fined £2 and 10s costs. Stuart McGarvie was convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs for handing over a firearm to an unauthorised person and 10s costs for being the holder of a license for a firearm and failing to notify his change of place of abode. For transferring a firearm to an unauthorised person, Gordon Thomas Goodin was convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs. CIVIL BUSINESS. Judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil claims: Hill and Hughes v M. Murray, claim £2 Bs, costs £1 5s 6d; Hill and Hughes v R. Crawley, claim £2 4s, costs £1 5s 6d; H. E. Jackson v D.. H. Coles, claim £7 15s, costs £1 Ils 6d; H. E. Jackson v A. T. McKenzie, claim £1 19s 6d, costs £1 3s 6d; H. E. Jackson v E. Cowan, claim £2 2s, costs £1 5s 6d; Watson and Co v W. H. Hooper, claim £4 5s 3d, costs £1 3s 6d; Watson and Co v G. Thorner, claim £4 ss, costs £1 3s 6d; Wards’ Cash Stores v D. H. Coles, claim £l9 16s sd, costs £2 15s. On a judgment summons, Frank Hampton Houseaux was ordered to pay forthwith £25 9s 6d to the Masterton Borough Council in default 24 days’ imprisonment. Warrant to be suspended if defendant pays £lO within seven days and then at the rate of £1 10s a month. BUILDING SOCIETY MEETING. The shareholders of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society met last night at Carterton to dispose, of the monthly appropriation of £6OO. Qn this occasion the amount was disposed of by ballot, and Mrs Isabella Coe, of Feilding, and formerly of Masterton, was the winner. Mrs Coe is thus entitled to a £6OO loan free of interest repayable by instalments of £1 weekly spread over a period of 11J years. It was decided to dispose of the next appropriation by sale on September 21 at Carterton. . PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. Three inspectors, including , Traffic Inspector Milne (Masterton), C. A. Nicholson (Greytown), and Petersen (Upper Hutt) and No. 1 Patrol P. L. * Beere (of the A.A., Wairarapa), are to be in Carterton, tomorrow to give motorists and pedestrians d demonstration of the correct use of. the recently made pedestrian crossings which have been provided adjacent'to the Post Office in Carterton. There will no doubt be particular interest-taken by the public, of the actual safety crossings, especially in view of the fact that a neighbouring town refused z to entertain a similar -proposition, considering that the fast motor traffic'passing through, was not a menace to pedestrians. .. LADIES’ GOLF. The following is the draw for the second round of the championship to be played on Saturday:—Mrs Orr v. Mrs B. Booth; Miss Welch v. Miss Armstrong; Mrs Forbes v. Miss Lamb; Mrs Smart v. Miss Booth; Mrs Murray v. Miss Campbell;.'Mrs Brow v. Mrs Robinson;. Mrs T. Moon v. Miss Peters; Mrs Riggs v. Mrs Stevens; Miss Hamer v. Miss O. Corbett; Miss Freer v. Miss J. Orr. In charge of the tea will be Misses I. and V. Corlett. FUNERAL OF MR W. H. PINK. The funeral of the late Mr W. H. Pink, of Waikanae took place on Tuesday at Levin. The cortege was an exceptionally big one, and many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathisers. The pall-bearers were Messrs Bert and Dudley Pink, of Waikanae (sons)’, A. H. Pink (Palmerston North), E. N. Pink (Levin), E. J. Pink (Ohau) (brothers), and R. Purcell, of Palmerston North, a brother-in-law. The burial service was read by the Rev. J. Dennis, Methodist minister of Levin, assisted by- the Methodist Home Missionary of Waikanae. Mr and-Mrs Alf. Pink, of Carterton, motored through to Levin, to attend the funeral. PERSONAL. Masters Bryan and Dick Quin, who are students of. St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, are spending the vacation with their mother in Carterton. DANCE ATTRACTION. Tut Coltman’s Australian Swing Band and Four Kings of Rhythm are appearing at the King's Theatre, Carterton, this evening and it is expected the dance will receive a bumper house. A buffet supper will be available. The performers are regular artists at the Majestic Cabaret, Wellington, and also at times their services are engaged by the broadcasting authorities. An evening of fun and melody is assured to patrons. While in Carterton the band will be staying at the Club Hotel.
