(Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) SARAGOSSA, August 24. The Republican defence is reported to be crumbling on the Ebro front, under a hurricane of insurgent bombs and shells. General Franco’s forces drove down frpm the heights north-west of Gandesa and claim to have re-taken the village of Corbera. They also shot down twenty planes. Desperate hand to hand fighting is proceeding, as it is realised that the issue on this front probably will decide the war. • SHORTAGE OF FOOD. BREAD RATION CUT DOWN IN BARCELONA. (Recd This Day, 10.35 a.m.) BARCELONA, August 24. The bread ration, of six ounces per head thrice weekly, has been reduced by a third, owing to the bombing of grain-laden ships. FRONTIER FATALITY. FRENCH SWIMMER SHOT DEAD BY REBELS. BAYONNE, August 24. .Insurgent sentries shot a French holiday swimmer in the Bidassoa River, on the Franco-Spanish frontier, when he was carried by the current to the Spanish bank.
