STREAM OF OFFENCES
INTOXICATED IN CHARGE ' OF CAR. COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “So many of these people who are accused of being intoxicated in charge are obviously decent people otherwise, and I hesitate to impose the maximum penalty of imprisonment without the option of a fine,” said Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., this morning. “There is, however, an almost continuous stream of these offences and I have indeed come to the conclusion, in common with other magistrates, that imprisonment terms should be imposed.” The Magistrate was referring to the case of Robert Mayne, aged 29. who pleaded guilty. Mayne was fined £2O, in default thirty days’ imprisonment. His driver's licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another within eighteen months. Counsel said Mayne was employed in a Government Department and would lose his job.
