The Otago score was composed of two penalty goals by 'Taylor, two potted goals by Trevathan, and tries by McLelland, Parkhill, and Taylor, one being converted by Taylor and one by Trevathan. Morrison registered all the points scored for his side, kicking four penalty goals and also a field goal. The game was marked by solid encounters between the forwards, but the back play on both sides lacked finish. At half-time Otago were leading by 17 points to 6. WIN FOR HAWKE’S BAY. A SPECTACULAR GAME. CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. A pack that played with traditional fire in the loose and backs who, given a feast of the ball, handled well and ran determinedly, kept the touring Hawke’s Bay Rugby team on top throughout the match with Canterbury today. Played in perfect conditions at Lancaster Park, the game was fast and spectacular. Although Canterbury’s indifferent form was disappointing to supporters of the home team, Hawke’s Bay’s margin of 15 points to 6 fairly represented the respective merits of the teams. Scorers for Hawke’s Bay were Fox (try and two penalties), Wilson (try) and Bradley (penalty). For Canterbury Foley scored a try and Heazlewood kicked a penalty. SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT. WON BY WANGANUI. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 24. The annual primary schools quadrangular Rugby tournament was concluded at Palmerston North today. Wanganui, by winning their three, matches against Wellington, Wairarapa and Manawatu, retaining the championship banner. Wanganui have now won the banner nine times. An interesting sidelight to this tournament is that it marked the first time in five years that the banner was not won by the home team. Wanganui put up a highly creditable performance in the tournament, scoring a total of 58 points, and having only eight scored against them. Wairarapa, with two wins, were runners-up; they were rather unlucky to have been beaten in the first day’s play by Wanganui. Wairarapa scored 33 points, and 20 were registered against them. Wellington scored 17 points, with 33 against them, and secured one win. The Manawatu team, which was not up to the standard set by other teams in previous years, had no wins, scored nine points, and had 44 scored against itIn the final match for the banner, Wanganui beat Manawatu by 22 points to nil. The other match, between Wairarapa and Wellington, resulted in a win for Wairarapa by 12 points to six. Beales, Te Tau, Goodin, and McLeod each scored an unconverted try. For Wairarapa D. Andrews scored a try, and Erskine kicked a penalty goal for Wellington. The match .was a fastmoving one, with Wairarapa in the ascendancy most of the time, due mainly to the efforts of a fine pack of forwards, with Trilford and Broughton always leading penetrating rushes. Behind the scrum Couch worked exceedingly well, and promises to develop into a useful man for some future Wairarapa team . McLeod and Golder were the pick of the backs. Wairarapa led by nine points to three at half-time. The Wairarapa team was: Rewi, Veale, Beales, Shepherd, McLeod, Golden, Couch, O’Shea, Trilford, Davey, O’Keefe, Oliver, Broughton, Te Tau, and Goodin.
