REFUGEE CHILD
ADOPTED BY SETTLERS. A WHAREAMA PARTY. The settlers at Whareama, Masterton, have decided to adopt a Chinese refugee child, and to assist in raising the necessary amount of money to feed, clothe, and educate one of these war victims, Mrs Stirling Buckley held a party at her home, “Alderford,” Whareama, recently. There were more than 40 people presentr, and the gratifying sum of more than £5 was raised. Mrs Buckley received her guests wearing a rose-pink jersey silk frock. The drawing-room and dining-room were bright with bulbs and japonica. Several townspeople had donated various articles, and these, disposed of in a novel and amusing manner, helped to swell the fund. The -guests also enjoyed a ”500” progressive tournament, the winners being Mrs Street and Mr Stuart Hay. A delicious supper was served, and all expressed great satisfaction at the financial outcome of a most pleasant evening.
